Extra Curriculum

Beyond the Amherst Curriculum

We have developed an extensive and varied extra-curricular programme. At the start of the school year we encourage children to take part in at least one extra-curricular activity from our list of 40 to 50 clubs. The clubs are generally free of charge and open to all pupils regardless of ability, although we recognise that some clubs are more suited to older children or children with particular talents. We do our best to give pupils the opportunity to participate in the clubs of their choice.

For those interested in sports we have football, rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics, tennis, cross-country, badminton, table tennis, netball, gymnastics and swimming. Sometimes we add other sports like lacrosse, basketball or volleyball. We are particularly proud of our cricket and gymnastics squads – both have reached county and national finals in recent years. Our chess club has produced three national under-11 chess champions and children regularly take part in tournaments and matches at county level.

For those who want to extend their learning, there are science, maths and computer clubs, as well as keyboard skills courses. We are lucky to have parent volunteers who have taught conversational language classes in French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and German. We recognise that talents can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, so we offer clubs for activities such as needlework, sewing, gardening, art, craft, magazine making and cake decorating. The flower arranging club has even had exhibits at the Chelsea Flower Show and Westminster Abbey.

For our young performing artists, we have drama, dance, ballet, orchestra, choir, small choir and chamber groups. We also offer a full programme of individual instrument tuition provided (for a fee) by Kent Music and other visiting speakers. We try to offer something for everyone. Whether looking to develop an existing talent or discover something new, your child is sure to find rewarding activities outside the classroom.

Extra Curricular

Our extra-curricular activities run throughout the year. We start early with many clubs starting before school whilst others take place either during lunch times and after school. We offer a full range of sports activities during the school year including football, table tennis, rugby, netball, dance, cricket, hockey, tennis, cross country, rounders, athletics and swimming. We also offer a range of creative clubs including art, photography, drama, cookery, gardening, ICT, chess and pottery, embroidery and scrap booking. Other clubs also include a magic club, a remote control club, a french club and several musicial groups. These include our school orchestra and choirs.

Music Tuition

During the week we are fortunate to have a number of visiting music teachers who offer the children a range of opportunities to learn a musical instrument. For more information about the lessons available you should either look in the clubs section of the website, speak to the reception or take a look at our music clubs board in the school.
