Curriculum

At Amherst School we want children to develop ownership of their learning and take pride in their work. They will experience a structured and inspiring curriculum. We want to prepare every child for the wide range of secondary schools they will attend. Our aim is ‘To Inspire Every pupil’ and develop their self-esteem through academic, sporting, musical and creative success. Reading is central to our curriculum and we aim to create life-long readers who read for pleasure. We recognise the important role our school plays in nurturing pupil to become valuable citizens in the wider community and therefore place a heavy emphasis on the PSHE curriculum. This is based on our six school values of Trust, Kindness, Determination, Politeness, Fairness and Cooperation.

We believe in the importance of a wide and exciting co-curricular programme that includes approx. 30 clubs a week. We also take all opportunities to enrich our curriculum through visits and workshops within school. We want children to experience memorable learning opportunities.

Amherst is a blend of tradition and forward thinking. We are passionate about retaining a strong sense of identity and history alongside innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Please see documents below that further detail our approach to teaching and learning and the curriculum structure. Each year group has a long term overview which is located in the year group section on this website.
